Supply Chain Analysis

Globalisation has led to increased competition in the pharmaceutical / chemical / cosmetics industry; increased cost-cutting measures has affected the situation in healthcare. Efficient logistics in the company is the foundation for successful market presence. The inspection and optimisation of the supply chains from the supplier to the client is largely decided based on competitive advantages.

Logistics Strategy

Logistics must be capable of offering solutions on-time for changing company strategies. Being prepared for change is crucial. The pharmaceutical industry shows that far-reaching legal requirements determine the strategic orientation of the complete logistics supply chain. Among other things, this means that the responsibility of the manufacturer extends from receiving raw materials to selling the products to the customer.

Master Plan

Master plans for chemical and pharmaceutical industries often include research and development, preparation of raw materials and agents (primary production), manufacture of finished projects (secondary production) and logistics accompanying the processes.

  • Product-overlapping grouping according to company areas
  • Alternatively separation according to product type (pharmacy, biotechnology, …)
  • Uniform expandability of all areas (often small, product-specific units)
  • Process-associated logistics close to demand locations
  • Logistics interface to external transport as close as possible to the site periphery

Distribution Networks

Your markets keep changing, your distribution network has to adapt to new sales channels:

  • Direct-to-Pharmacy
Pharmaceutical companies face radical changes to the distribution of their products. New sales channels lead from the manufacturer directly to the pharmacy. What changes does that have to the processes and interfaces in your company?.
  • Sales channels via Retail chains for pharmaceutical companies
It can be expected in the future that large chain stores will also have their own pharmacies. Do these chains receive their supplies from wholesalers or directly from the manufacturer?
  • Direct sales for cosmetics
  • Home shopping via the internet

Can your current logistics optimally cope with the changes?

How many distribution centres are necessary? How many manufacturing facilities? Where should they be located? We deal with these questions together with you and use special simulation tools.

General Planning of Logistics Centres

  • We cover all planning services for your logistics centre.
  • You make all final decisions regarding allocation of contracts. You choose whether to use a general contractor or allocate contracts individually.
  • We integrate your specialists from different fields during the general planning.
  • Renovations and new constructions require extensive coordination with authorities. Our experience of many years and expertise in this field coupled with continuous training has helped us know what matters. The topic of dangerous goods is dealt with in detail.
  • Ecological aspects are the foundation of our planning.
  • A further important point is safety: We include topics such as plant safety and controlled access right from the beginning stages.
  • We support you with environment analysis: The location surroundings could bring difficulties. Fire risks or leakage of toxic materials could harm your company.

Construction Planning

Buildings for pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics companies have unique demands:

  • Room conditioning: A large part of building services is dedicated to temperature and climate control, ventilation, humidification and dehumidification, supply and disposal
  • Zone concepts
  • Production sequences
  • Media supply
  • Easy-to-clean process units
  • Controlled access

Construction Management

You take care of business, we take care of construction, check costs, deadlines and quality. We support you during validation and qualification of the building and its functional units.

Fire protection

  • Constructional fire protection: We ensure optimal fire protection in your new building, but also support you with fire-protection concepts for existing buildings. Special attention is paid to features like quench-water retention and works fire department.
  • Product protection through fire prevention: We check alternative systems to prevent fire. This ensures not only your delivery capacity, but also the product value that is higher than in other branches. Long replenishment times are thus avoided.

Zone Concepts for Hygiene Operations

Safe processes require different zone concepts to protect people and products. Zone transfers must always be controlled.

  • Hygiene zones have to be clearly defined in order to avoid contamination. Corresponding locked zones for people and material have to be planned.
  • Room classification with controlled ventilation and filter systems to restrict particles are imporant elements in logistics processes. Controlled air humidity is especially important when preparing active ingredients and tablets before the preparations are protectively packaged.
  • Temperature zones: The effectiveness of products is largely affected by the adherence to defined temperatures. Closed cold chains are increasingly becoming important.

Facility Layout

Layout planning in chemical and pharmaceutical companies is highly affected by the concept of zones. Changing between zones required particular measures:

  • Hygiene zones: Changes are only possible by using airlocked areas. Each area needs individual safety standards.
  • Temperature / climatic zones: Change times have to be held as short as possible if the areas have been conditioned differently. Dwelling times outside of prescribed limits have to be documented.

All process steps have to be qualified and validated by the operator. Any changes to processes need renewed checks in order to ensure product safety.

Production Logistics

Production logistics in chemical and pharmaceutical industries is subject to high hygiene and safety standards. Validated process requirements have to be strictly followed.

Process safety thus takes precedence over economic considerations. This is applicable for sensitive production processes as well as operative logistics. Product and batch information have to be consistently documented. Temperature and air-conditioning limits have to be ensured.

Outsourcing is subject to particular guidelines due to special demands in the pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetics industry. The legal requirements for the manufacturers also apply to service providers and are thus very important during drafting the contract.

Outsourcing of logistics services is always sensible when the following conditions are available:

  • Handling levels are reduced
  • Synergies result
  • The processes to be outsourced are stable and optimised
  • The processes at the service provider can be qualified and validated

We help you create the conditions for a successful outsourcing project and support you during transition. More often than not, complete production steps are handed over to service providers:

  • Tablet production and/or packaging
  • Storage of raw materials, bulk products or finished products
  • Logistics for customer delivery

This affects your company's supply chain in a large way. These steps, however, have to be prepared in the best way possible since the responsibility for the complete process is always connected to your reputation.
